May is doing what May does in Southeast Louisiana — putting redfish in the marsh.
With windy conditions pushing bait deep into the protected areas, Capt. Jimmy Corley made the call to run into the marsh and chase reds this week. It paid off.
Redfish
The redfish bite has been strong.
A group of four guys down from Alabama worked with Capt. Jimmy and put together a solid limit before the morning was out. With winds up and chop on open water, the marsh was the right call — protected, fishy, and full of reds looking for a meal.
This is typical for redfish in the St. Bernard marshes this time of year. As water temps climb through May, reds push into the shallows and stay active through the morning hours. If you’ve been waiting on a limit day, right now is a good window.
Speckled Trout
The trout bite was tougher on this trip.
After boxing their reds, the crew made a run at speckled trout. They managed a few for the box, but the trout weren’t cooperating the way the reds were. That’s fishing — some days one species is on fire and the other takes a back seat.
Trout fishing in Southeast Louisiana typically gets more consistent as the season progresses into summer, with cooler morning hours being the most productive window.
